Any power that can be abused will be abused: Public Schools Spying On Their Students And Students Families

“PHILADELPHIA – The FBI is investigating a Pennsylvania school district accused of secretly activating webcams inside students’ homes, a law enforcement official with knowledge of the case told The Associated Press on Friday.

The FBI will explore whether Lower Merion School District officials broke any federal wiretap or computer-intrusion laws, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation.

Days after a student filed suit over the practice, Lower Merion officials acknowledged Friday that they remotely activated webcams 42 times in the past 14 months, but only to find missing student laptops. They insist they never did so to spy on students, as the student’s family claimed in the federal lawsuit.

Families were not informed of the possibility the webcams might be activated in their homes without their permission in the paperwork students sign when they get the computers, district spokesman Doug Young said…

The American Civil Liberties Union also entered the case Monday, filing a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the student, arguing the alleged secret webcam activation in a home amounts to an illegal search.

Robbins filed suit last week, alleging that Harriton officials took a photo of him inside his home in November. He said he learned of it when an assistant principal said she knew he was engaging in improper behavior at home. According to Haltzman, the supposed pills were actually Mike and Ike candies.”

They are spying on our children, they are spying on us!  Look This school intentionally gave every child they have a lap top knowing they had they ability to remotely turn on these webcams  whenever they wanted so they would have access to their students and their students families lives.  Orwell is rolling in his grave right now.  Yeah, they will say that’s not why they did it but they knew that when they were doing it they would have that power.  Any person no matter how “good” they think their intentions are that would think this is a good idea should not be allowed around children, ever.  Any person who would want that power should never be granted it no matter how good they think their cause is.

They accessed a computer that had not been stolen (the reason they claim they use the cameras) and then tried to claim some kid is doing something wrong in his own home.  Now the kid says he was eating candy, he might have been, he might not have been.  That isn’t the point not only did the school district spy on the kid they used it to try to go after him.  Had the kid been doing drugs that is for the cops to deal with and they can’t spy on you without a warrant.  This is a school, not a police department.  Now we should ask ourselves how many other schools are doing the same thing and just have not been caught?

The sad thing about this is that the school is going to lose a ton of money because of their own actions and then stick the bill on the taxpayers and come crawling back for more money from the taxpayers because they just lost a ton of money and need to make it up.  And after all that the teachers unions will make sure no one gets fired for this, not only that but they will be right there bitching about needing more money for schools while they protect teachers and schools that would do this.  And when it’s all over at the end of the day the public schools will still pump out undereducated children.

Who watches the watchers and who watches them?

I hate it here…

  1. “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face-for ever.” – George Orwell

  2. This is really terrible and a shame that it isn’t blasting in headlines everywhere. Liberty is under assault and nobody seems to care

  3. Yes I learned about the sad state of affairs that happened at that school a couple days ago. It’s just great that in my home state it’s happening. I already didn’t like public schools now I just flat out hate them. So they made the kids all happy and shit just giving away computers like that. They didn’t think there was anything wrong with spying on them either. Where I come from it’s literally unheard of for students to have enough books let alone giving them computers. That just goes to show that homeschooling is the best. I’m trying to do that with my own child. Well, that’s a different story. That way she wouldn’t be spied on, she would get a good education and if she didn’t I would only have myself to blame. She wouldn’t have to go through any metal detectors and other bullshit that makes public school horrible. I guess the constitution is shit to people anymore. I guess after what over 200 years we know better and can do what we want with it and not care. People just take it upon themselves to dice it up anyway they want to. God Bless America!!! yeah and Let freedom ring while you’re at it. That’a why society as a whole, to me can go to hell. They can keep that ignorance away from me. Don’t need it or want it.

  4. Our society is morphing into the strange love child of A Brave New World and 1984.

  5. Why? that’s all I like to know. There is no Utopia. Most of our society is striving for that. But I never believed it. There are the haves and the have nots and that’s just how it is. How the hell could someone who worked for nothing get the same things and novelties that I or the fellow working man/women get? Isn’t that what America has been based on? Really, what am I kicking my ass going to school for if doesn’t matter? Most of my generation take things for granted and think they should be handed everything. There’s turmoil in society and that’s what’s wrong. They can’t think for themselves and they can barely take care of themselves because they have the attitude that as long as it doesn’t affect them outright they could give two shits about what’s going on around them. I don’t see anything right in that way of thinking. Now is the time to have your own mind and have your own thoughts. Without that we are nothing and will continue to be that way.

  6. Utopian ideas can be directly linked to almost all of the problems of the last century. The sad thing is that we still haven’t woken up.

You are right about how people are. Everyone expects everything handed to them without having to work for it.

  7. It’s a really weird case this, i wonder if any of those monitoring have an unhealthy interest in children. Just asking, given the number of teachers being caught trying to have sex with their students, it wouldn’t surprise me.

  8. I didn’t even think about that. I was too worried about the other implication that I did pay attention to it. Really though not only are they spying but what other reasons could people be using this for. Some pervert could be uploading these videos onto the internet for all their friends to see.

  9. Administrators who spy on their students should have cameras installed in their own homes, perhaps in their bathrooms, without any way of turning them off—and have the videos broadcast on the internet. Two months of this should do the trick. One must teach these rotten, sadistic people how to behave.

  10. I will have to disagree, I don’t think they should have cameras put in their homes. I don’t, that’s not right to do to anyone. However the people responsible should – as a warning – be put to death, or at least spend the rest of their life in jail. That would make an example of them. Now you might think that is harsh but I don’t, anyone who would try to do this is trying to take away other freedoms, first it starts with the cameras and only god knows were it goes from there. People who would try to take away someone’s freedoms like this have forfeited their right to live in a free country. Now any person who has been given a position of authority and not only abuses that authority but uses it to take away other rights deserves nothing but the gallows. If they are afraid of the gallows they won’t do something wrong, or they won’t try to get themselves in a position of authority.

  11. I see not exactly an eye for an eye but it’s the same principle. Heaven help the day I find out there’s been cameras installed in my daughter’s locker room or some bogus shit like that. Hell didn’t that happen already? But having the power that a parent does I don’t think I will let that happen. Like I said before if ya gotta homeschool them then so be it. At least ya know what the hell is going on with your child.
